The estate was purchased for the state in 1975 and six years later Mr. Henry McElheney presented it as a gift to the Irish Nation. This is a must see!

The Glebe Gallery houses the art collection of Derek Hill, famous for landscape and portrait who lived and worked here from 1954 until he presented his house and art collection to the state in 1981. His studio has been converted into a very charming modern gallery with works by Degas, Renoir and Picasso.

Newmills Corn and Flax Mills
Newmills Corn and Flax Mills are on the Glenties Road out of Letterkenny and here you can see one of the largest working waterwheels in Ireland, made by the Stevenson Foundry of Strabane in 1867.

Grianan Ailigh
Meaning stone fort of the sun, this ancient fortress & sun temple were built by the druids in 1700 BC. It later became the royal residence of the O'Neills, Overlords of Ulster & High Kings of Ireland circa 5th century AD. The view from here is breathtaking, one of the best you'll see anywhere in Ireland.

Colmcille Heritage Centre
Saint Colmcille or Columba is thought to have been born in Gartan, close to Lough Gartan in County Donegal in approximately 521AD. St Colmcille founded the Irish monasteries at Glencolmcille and Kells and before founding his monastery on Iona in 563AD. It was from there that he brought Christianity to the North of England.
